The SEEM PhD student, Mr. SHEN Changqing, who is supervised by Dr. Peter TSE and Prof. KONG Fanrang under the USTC-CityU joint PhD program, has been awarded the following scholarships for his good research outputs during his PhD study:
Speaker: Prof. Chin Pan, Distinguished Professor, Department of Engineering and System Science, and Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering, National Tsing Hua University
Highlights: In Taiwan, there are three nuclear power plants with six units in operation, and now sharing about 20% of electricity. The safety and operational performance of these units are very high. The new energy policy after the Fukushima accident and its impact on nuclear power development in Taiwan was addressed in the talk.
Dr Oscar Hui Kwan-san, Lecturer from the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management, invented an air purification technology that converts air pollutants into harmless by-products by ozone catalytic oxidation (OCO).
Congratulations to Prof. Li Han Xiong, co-chair of Technical Committee on Intelligent Learning in Control Systems, on receiving the IEEE Most Active SMC Technical Committee Award at the 2012 SMC Conference. The award recognizes the committee’s ongoing involvement in interdisciplinary aspects of integration of learning and control in the area of control, intelligent and autonomous systems.
The Centre for System Informatics Engineering (CSIE) at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) has received a generous donation of 20 sets of LabVIEW Core Development software package and its associating toolkits from National Instruments Corporation (National Instruments).
Congratulations to Dr. Hongyi SUN who is one of the six teachers in the University to receive the Teaching Excellence Award for 2011/2012. The award recognizes his new curriculum development, innovative teaching philosophy, scholarly activities related to teaching, leadership and other achievement.
BETQE students participated the HKSQ (Hong Kong Society for Quality) Inter-university Company-based Student Project Competition 2012 in March 2012. The competition offered an opportunity for students to work on a real-life quality management case and propose resolution. Among totally nine teams from four Hong Kong universities, the CityU team with members of four BETQE students Year-3 students, namely, CHAN Oi Yee, DU Ying Si, HO Hoi Ning and HE Mei Feng, got the 2nd Runner Up prize. Their improvement topic is "How to reduce the electricity consumption and maintain healthy environment of a livestock farm?".
Professor K.L. Tsui and Professor Min Xie visited Tsinghua University on 26 February, and attended THU-CITYU Workshop on High Speed Rail Network (HSRN) 2012. Professor Tsui presented a talk on "Research in Prognostics and Systems Health Management" and Professor Xie gave one on "Research on reliability of complex systems and some related issues".
With many countries looking to develop high-speed railways to move growing populations faster over long distances, the international railway community increasingly emphasizes the need for continuous improvements to enhance safeguards for passengers. SEEM organized a seminar on "Safety Management and Risk Assessment in Railway Operations" on 24 February 2012 together with Hong Kong Society for Quality, American Society for Quality - Hong Kong, and Institute of Railway Signal Engineers - Hong Kong Section. This seminar aims to provide participants with an updated view on contemporary policies and practices of safety management and risk assessment in railways operations. There are more than 70 people from academic and industrial sectors participated this half-day seminar.
Professor XIE Min delivered 23 Ramanujan Endowment Lecture at Anna University in India.
Dr. LU Xin-Jiang received Hiwin Doctoral Dissertation Award 2011 (首届上银优秀机械博士论文奖). His PhD supervisor is Professor H.X. LI.
Dr. Peter Tse Wai-tat, Associate Professor from the Department of MEEM, said lift ropes could snap if they were not properly maintained. Use over a long period of time can lead to abrasions and metal fatigue, increasing the risk of an accident.
Mr. CHEN Yin, a PhD student, won a First Class Award at the 7th National Postgraduate Mathematics Contest in Modelling for his work on the early detection of mutated genes that can cause colorectal cancer, together with two other master's degree graduates from the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Information Systems. They were one of the 61 teams to receive the Award selected from among 1,995 teams formed by nearly 6,000 higher degree students from 229 institutions across the country.
Congratulations to Professor Han-Xiong Li on being elevated to IEEE Fellow for his contributions to fuzzy logic control and its applications, effective 1 January 2011. IEEE Fellow is a distinction and the highest grade of membership in the IEEE reserved for select IEEE members whose extraordinary accomplishments in IEEE-designated fields of interest are deemed fitting of this prestigious grade elevation. Each year, following a rigorous evaluation procedure, the IEEE Fellow Committee recommends a select group of recipients for one of the Association's most prestigious honours, elevation to IEEE Fellow.
