The Library offers supplemental workshops taught by librarians to improve our users' awareness and understanding of current research resources, tools, and strategies. Additionally, the Library organizes supplemental workshops that are led by vendor representatives to increase users' understanding of various electronic resources.

This workshop will show you the strategies to obtain better Google search results more quickly. You will learn how to:

  • Search Google efficiently and effectively in order to find needed information.
  • Utilize different Google tools in order to enhance your research.
  • Identify additional search engines and directories to maximize optimal results from the web.

Using Oxford University Press Online Resources: Research & Reference Information @ Your Fingertips

Covering Oxford Reference, Oxford Scholarship Online and Oxford English Dictionary Online, this workshop will show you how to make use of Oxford resources to find quality research and reference information. You will learn how to:

  • Locate reference information from a variety of subjects – from Art, to Contemporary World, to Science.
  • Use new FREE search tool across Oxford references.
  • Search the collection of full text monographs.

Finding Images

Are you looking for images to use in your presentation or report? Do you want to know more about various resources and how to use them to find good quality images? In this workshop, you will learn how to:

  • Apply the concept of copyright and fair dealing when searching for images.
  • Identify sources of images.
  • Recognize the information needed to create citations for images.

Journal Rankings – Evaluating the Impact and Quality of Journals

In this workshop, you will be introduced to the major tools to evaluate journals and to create journal rankings. These tools include Journal Citation Report (JCR) of Thomson Reuters and Scopus Analyzer. You will learn how to:

  • Identify the metrics or indicators that help to reflect the place of a journal within a subject discipline.
  • Differentiate the journal ranking tools available to you.
  • Apply selected journal ranking tools to measure the impact and quality of journals.

Introduction to Finding Company Information

As part of this workshop, you will learn how to:

  • Find company profiles.
  • Locate financial information.
  • Find key competitors.
  • Search journals and news sources to locate case studies, independent analyses of company strategies, and more.

Web of Science: Find out Where, and by Whom a Paper has been Cited

Web of Science is a major research database that covers Sciences Citation Index Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index, Arts and Humanities Citation Index, and Conference Proceedings Citation Indexes. Access to cited references from 1970 onwards is available for most records. In this workshop, you will learn how to:

  • Search and view cited references to journal articles.
  • Find author and institutional research.
  • View citation maps.
  • Set up a personal research profile.

Strategies for Using IEEE Xplore: Insider Tips & What's New

This workshop will provide tips and tricks to help you with your research using IEEE Xplore and additional online resources. You will learn how to:

  • Discover additional search terms to uncover the "perfect" paper.
  • View full text peer reviewed papers that are not out in print yet.
  • Be alerted when new papers on your topic are online.
  • Use IEEE Xplore as a job searching tool.
  • Submit a paper to IEEE publications.
  • Get involved in IEEE activities (fellowship, scholarship and competitions).

Scopus: Track and Analyse Research from around the World

Scopus is a major research database, covering the international literature in science, technology, medical and social sciences. Cited references for papers published after 1996 are included. In this workshop, you will learn:

  • How to locate scholarly research on a topic.
  • What authors and articles have been cited and by whom.
  • Who are the major authors and what are the major journals in a specific research area.
  • How to track research trends.

Talk — How to Get Published in IOP (Institute of Physics) Journals

Prof. Mingfang LU (IOP Editor-in-Chief, China) will show you how to get published in IOP journals. IOP is a leading professional society publisher for the advancement of physics and has published more than 60 physics related journals. In this talk, Prof. Lu will offer you advice on presenting your paper in the best possible way to help your paper get published in IOP as well as in other world-class journals.
